Monstera
Monstera, famously known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is a tropical beauty native to the rainforests of Central America. Loved for its large, glossy leaves with natural splits and holes (called fenestrations), it adds an instant jungle vibe to any space. The most popular variety, Monstera deliciosa, can grow quite large indoors, climbing or trailing as it matures. It’s fast-growing, bold, and relatively low-maintenance, perfect for anyone looking to make a statement with greenery.
Pet Safe
No, Monsteras contain insoluble calcium oxalates, which can cause irritation if chewed by pets or children. Keep out of reach, especially from curious cats!
Light
Monstera prefers bright, indirect light, but can adapt to moderate light as well. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while too little light may result in fewer or no splits in the leaves. Near a North- or East-facing window, or a few feet back from a bright South-facing one, is best.
Water Requirements
Water your Monstera when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, usually about once a week. In winter, reduce your watering frequency slightly. These plants like humidity, so occasional misting or placing near a humidifier helps, especially in drier climates.
Watch out for…
If you see yellowing leaves that is typically a sign of overwatering, if you see brown leaf tips that could be low humidity or inconsistent watering. If the leaves are not splitting, that is usually due to low light or a young plant.
Similar care to…
Monstera shares care needs with plants like Philodendron, ZZ Plant, and Pothos. Any plant that like bright, indirect light and moderate watering!
