Fittonia 'Nerve Plant'

Fittonia 'Nerve Plant'

Fittonia, also known as ‘Nerve Plant’,  is a vibrant tropical houseplant admired for its striking, mosaic-like foliage. Each compact plant features richly colored leaves accented by bold, contrasting veins in shades of white, pink, or red.

Native to tropical rainforests of South America, Fittonia naturally grows as a low, spreading groundcover, making it especially well suited for terrariums, small planters, and tabletop displays. With the right humidity and lighting, these colorful plants bring a lively tropical feel and a pop of texture to indoor spaces.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect or filtered light to maintain its vibrant leaf color and healthy growth. It can tolerate moderate light, but low light may cause the colors to fade and growth to slow. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

Water
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, allowing only the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Fittonia prefers evenly moist soil and may wilt dramatically if it becomes too dry, though it usually recovers quickly after watering.
Use a well-draining soil mix and a container with drainage holes to prevent excess water from accumulating around the roots.

Pet Safe
Fittonia species are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. As with all houseplants, it is still best to keep them out of reach of pets and children to prevent accidental damage to the plant.

Watch out for…
Fittonia thrives in higher humidity and may struggle in very dry indoor environments. Low humidity can cause leaf edges to crisp or droop. Because the plant naturally stays compact and low-growing, it benefits from stable moisture and consistent indoor conditions.
Watch for common houseplant pests such as spider mites, aphids, and fungus gnats, particularly in warm or humid environments.

Similar care to…
Shares similar care requirements with other humidity-loving tropical plants often grown in terrariums. It thrives under conditions similar to small tropical foliage plants that prefer bright, indirect light, consistently moist soil, and higher humidity.
