Monstera 'Swiss Cheese'

Monstera 'Swiss Cheese'

Monstera adansonii ‘Wide Form,’ commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is a beloved houseplant known for its abundant natural fenestrations (the oval holes that give the leaves their iconic look). This wide form features broader, more robust foliage compared to the narrow variety, creating a fuller and more dramatic appearance.

Native to Central and South America, this climbing tropical plant thrives when trained up a moss pole, totem, or lattice, where it can produce larger, more mature leaves.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage strong growth and pronounced fenestration. It can tolerate medium light, but growth may slow and leaves may develop fewer holes. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Water
Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings, typically every 7–10 days depending on your environment.

It prefers evenly moist soil but should never sit in water. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Yellowing leaves often indicate overwatering, while drooping or curling can signal thirst.

Pet Safe
No, Monstera ‘Swiss Cheese’ is toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. It contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive system. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

Watch out for…
As a natural climber, this plant benefits from vertical support, without it, stems may trail and leaves may stay smaller. Leggy growth can occur in low light.

Monitor for common pests such as spider mites and thrips, especially in dry indoor conditions.

Similar care to…
Shares care habits with other climbing aroids like Monstera deliciosa and Rhaphidophora tetrasperma. Also comparable in watering and light needs to Heartleaf Philodendron and Pothos varieties.
