Ficus
There are many varieties of ficus ranging from the classic Fiddle Leaf Fig to the more compact Ficus Elastica (rubber plant), and Ficus Microcarpa (a bonsai) but each brings its own unique charm! While they can be slightly picky about their environment, don’t worry—once you find the right spot with plenty of indirect light and a consistent watering routine, your Ficus will become a beautiful focal point in your space!
Pet Toxicity
Ficus plants are toxic to cats and dogs.
Light
Most Ficus plants thrive in bright, indirect light, but it’s important to research your specific variety to ensure it's getting the right amount of light. Some Ficus varieties need very bright sunlight, while others do better in partial light conditions.
Water Requirements
Allow the top 2-3 inches of soil dry out between thorough waterings. Ficus do not like to dry out completely, but are also prone to root rot if left to sit in excess water. Be sure to allow your ficus to drain thoroughly after watering.
Adjust watering according to the season, watering more frequently during the spring and summer and less during fall and winter.
Watch out for…
When pruning a ficus, be mindful that the cut areas can release a milky latex substance. This latex is a mild irritant, so be sure to wash your hands with soap and warm water if you come into contact with it.
