Red Prayer Plant

Red Prayer Plant

Maranta leuconeura ‘Red,’ commonly known as the Red Prayer Plant, is a beloved tropical houseplant admired for its richly patterned foliage and vibrant color contrast.

Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, this plant thrives in warm, humid environments and naturally grows along the forest floor beneath filtered light. Like other prayer plants, its leaves gently fold upward in the evening and reopen during the day, a fascinating movement that gives the plant its common name.

Typically growing about 8–12 inches tall with a spreading, trailing habit, Maranta ‘Red’ works beautifully on tabletops, plant stands, shelves, or hanging planters where its colorful foliage can cascade and be easily admired.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can adapt to moderate light conditions, but the leaf colors may appear less vibrant and growth may slow. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause fading, scorching, or curling of the delicate leaves.

Water
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil begins to dry, usually about once a week depending on temperature and humidity.
Marantas appreciate evenly moist soil, so avoid letting the plant dry out completely. Use well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from sitting around the roots.

Pet Safe
Maranta plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a safe and attractive choice for pet-friendly homes.

Watch out for…
Dry air and inconsistent watering are the most common challenges. Low humidity can cause brown leaf edges or curling leaves. If the plant appears droopy, check the soil moisture — it may need water or slightly higher humidity.

Keep an eye out for common indoor pests such as spider mites, fungus gnats, or mealybugs, especially in very dry environments.

Similar care to…
Shares similar care needs with other tropical foliage plants that enjoy warm temperatures, steady moisture, and higher humidity. It grows well alongside other prayer plants and tropical understory species that thrive in bright indirect light and consistently moist soil.
